About

Why Organizations Misbehave is a newsletter about why organizations don't work the way they're supposed to — and why that usually has less to do with the people in them than it looks like.

Most explanations for organizational problems default to individual failings: someone lacks judgment, someone isn't leading well, someone doesn't care enough. This newsletter doesn't deny that individual failings matter, but it starts from a different premise. Most problems are actually the predictable output of structural conditions — the incentives, decision rights, information flows, and accountability structures a person is operating inside. Change the structure, and often the behavior resolves on its own.

Each edition takes one recurring pattern — in leadership, decision-making, accountability, feedback, or team performance — and traces it back to the structural conditions producing it. The goal is diagnostic clarity: understanding what's actually happening before reaching for a fix.

New editions are sent by email as they're published. There's no cost to subscribe.
